Type 1 diabetes accounts for approximately 10% of people with diabetes. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin this is an autoimmune response. This type of diabetes is much less likely to be seen in close family members. Unfortunately, it cannot be avoided by lifestyle changes.
N.B. SOME PEOPLE GET CONFUSED AND THINK IF YOU HAVE TYPE 2 DIABETES AND TAKE INSULIN THAT MEANS YOU BECOME SOMEONE WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES.
THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
